China Blues
China Blues, 2010. Pottery shards, paint chips.

I find it fascinating that all these bits of history just wash up on the banks of the Thames. Here pottery shards from various eras, collected at low tide, are matched up with paint chips from local hardware stores.

It’s a way of making the unfamiliar familiar, by pairing these bits of British history with the colors I love.

The exercise also references the way things like paint colors and interiors take on so much more importance when you’re the trailing spouse or an accidental housewife with a lot of time on your hands. Your days get longer but your world gets smaller.
