student: playing with stenciled lettering

I’ve started volunteering one day a week at Craft Central, a very worthy non-profit that promotes and supports the work of designer-makers. As part of its Craft London series, there are workshops with designers and crafters. Thursday night, RC and I attended a stenciling workshop with graphic designer and typographer David Ottley. For his MA at Central Saint Martin’s, David created a typeface based on stencils. He brought some of the documentation for his project, and his work was impressive and inspiring. And made the type-geek in me go eeee!

We had materials like cardboard and thin brass sheets to work with, but knowing my luck with sharp blades (have the scar in my thigh to prove it), I ultimately cut my stencil letters out of paper:
