student: the anthropologist that wasn’t

January 7th, 2010

How cool does this class sound? Anthropology, Development and Tourism: This module explores the role of travel and tourism within a global context. You will examine the practice of tourism, its associated images, and the links between tourism and notions of heritage, identity, imagery, landscapes and ritualistic characteristics. You will also develop a critical perspective on the self as a tourist.

It’s a new year, I’m looking ahead to 2010 in London, so naturally I’m looking up classes. There are so many interesting talks, workshops and courses, I’m tempted to just fill my days with classes. Creative stitching? Woodworking? Ballroom dance? History of fashion? Yes, please! But I’m not here to be a full-time student. And at £400 for that one class, I can’t afford it either!

I am considering taking this one-day Taste of Anthropology session at City Lit though. Sometimes I really wish I’d majored in anthropology at Berkeley, since I adored the Anthropology of Food class I took and I get so much pleasure from observing people’s behavior and habits. Just think, I could be a design anthropologist now! I know, I know, what’s stopping me from doing it now?
